The KvI Collection
I am a woman phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman, that's me.
Maya Angelou
The theme for Kei vs Ivy's first fine jewellery collection was conceived whilst reading Maya Angelou's poem, Phenomenal Woman. It wasn't until a year later that the designs were born – on a trip to Istanbul with one of my dearest friends Monika, who I lovingly introduce in conversations as, "You know Monika with a 'k' right? My bestie with the fabulous hair...”
Instantly falling in love with the ornate beauty of Istanbul, it was a few days into our Turkish holiday; after resisting the charm of many a persuasive Grand Bazaar shopkeeper, our resolve finally crumbled when we met a charismatic pashmina seller and his family who sold beautiful oriental carpets around the corner.
Marvelling at the craftsmanship of these Turkish rugs, we drank aromatic apple tea as richly coloured tapestries were unrolled one by one. Stories were handwoven into each textile using ancient symbols, some as old as 3000 B.C. Many of these spoke to us; they expressed hopes for fertility, strength, abundance, protection, love and happiness.
It was the simplicity of these signs that I saw ‐ the duality in their decorative use and minimalist appearance when stood alone, which sparked my imagination.
A memorable girls' holiday, a vibrant city, rich with history – this experience inspired the collection – a symbolic celebration of women, sisterhood and personal empowerment.
As a personal expression of gratitude, these handmade pieces are a love note to all the wonderful women I have encountered throughout my life: my dear friends, associates, acquaintances, bosses, and women, some whom I barely knew, strangers even, who offered me kindness when I least expected it. And of course, my own mother, a wonderful role model who has always been a great influence.
And so, to us… strong, phenomenal women.
